Privacy Policy

Last updated: 1 November 2026

Introduction

Social Share Button is committed to protecting your privacy and providing a transparent and user-friendly experience.

This Privacy Policy explains how information is handled by:

  • the Library: the Social Share Button package (npm @aossie-org/social-share-button, the CDN build and its framework wrappers), and
  • the Website: social-share-button.aossie.org, the project's documentation and demo site.

Both follow a privacy-conscious and local-first approach. Neither has user accounts, cookies, trackers or advertising.

Information and Permissions

The Library does not collect, store or send any information itself. When a visitor clicks a share button, it opens the chosen platform's share page (for example WhatsApp, X or LinkedIn) with the page's URL and share text, or copies the link to the clipboard. The Library emits share events (a browser CustomEvent or a callback) inside the page; it sends them nowhere unless the website owner connects an analytics adapter.

The Website does not ask you for personal information and does not request any device permissions. It saves the following in your browser's local storage:

  • theme: your light or dark mode choice
  • ssb:framework: the framework tab you last picked in the installation guide

This stays in your browser and is never sent to us.

Data Storage

Only the preferences listed above are stored by the Website, in your browser on your device; they are not uploaded to or kept on any server. Loading the Website still sends standard request details (such as your IP address) to its host, GitHub Pages, as described below.

Data Sharing

The Library and the Website do not sell your personal information, and do not use personal information for targeted advertising.

  • Share platforms: when you click a share button, your browser opens that platform's page with the URL and text being shared. What the platform does next is governed by its own privacy policy.
  • Support page: the Website's Support page links to GitHub Sponsors. If you choose to donate, you do so on GitHub, and GitHub's privacy statement applies.
  • Analytics (websites using the Library): a website owner can choose to connect the Library's events to an analytics tool (such as Google Analytics, Plausible, PostHog, Mixpanel or Segment). That website's own privacy policy applies to that data, not this one. The Website does not connect any analytics tool.
  • Hosting: the Website is hosted on GitHub Pages. GitHub receives your IP address and standard request details when your browser loads the Website, and may keep them in server logs. See GitHub's Privacy Statement.
  • Package hosting: if a website loads the Library from npm or the jsDelivr CDN, those services receive the requests for the Library files.

Where a third party processes information, its handling of that information is governed by its own privacy policy and terms of service.

Data Security

The Library and the Website aim to minimize privacy and security risks by not collecting data and by keeping preferences on your device.

However, no method of electronic storage or transmission can be guaranteed to be completely secure. Users are also responsible for maintaining the security of their devices.

Data Deletion

You can remove everything the Website stores by clearing your browser's site data for social-share-button.aossie.org.

Children's Privacy

The Library and the Website are not intended to knowingly collect personal information from children where such collection is prohibited by applicable law. They do not collect personal information from anyone.

Free Access

The Library and the Website are free to use, with no paid features.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes to the Library, the Website, or applicable legal requirements.

Any updates will be made available wherever this Privacy Policy is published.
